What’s up guys. In this weeks pursuit for new and better tones, I’ve been digging into a ton of new content.
Here’s some of my favorite findings...
Did you know John Mayer offers lessons for free?
I didn’t know either, until the other day I was fucking around on YouTube and came across a ton of videos where John Mayer was jamming and teaching.
Sure, it’s not a “traditional” lesson but he is teaching and there’s a ton of gold in each video. A lot of dope shit to learn.
Here’s a few of my favorites from one of these videos:
I came across this really cool video the other day where this dude, Dan Patlansky shows how he gets a Wha-like sound from his pickup selector.
If you have a Strat I’d recommend watching the whole thing but @ 12:07 you can get straight to the explanation
@ 12:37 & 12:48 you’ll hear examples: https://youtu.be/oAe1vatPpzA
Step-by-step:
If you read last weeks journal, then you know I'm a big fan of Gary Clark Jr.'s. A big part of that has to do with his tone. Like the rest of the greats, he has a distinctive tone. You know it's Gary when you hear it. I wanted to learn more. How the hell is he getting that tone, and how the fuck can I get close?
This video by Premier Guitar covers it all.
Here's what his pedal board looks like:
Fulltone Octafuzz --> Function F(x) The Cannon Dual Fuzz --> Strymon Flint --> Dunlop Signature Crybaby Wha --> Function F(x) Cluserfuzz --> Hermida Audio Zen Drive
I gotta learn this move by Buddy Guy and am gonna be working on it this week. It’s simple but fucking smooth as hell.

“(Don’t worry) If there is a hell below, we’re all going to go” by Curtis Mayfield.
I never really heard much of Curtis’s music. But the other day I was listening to an interview about Jimi Hendrix and learned that Curtis was a big influence in Jimi’s playing.
Well, now I had to hear what this dude was all about. I ended up hearting just about the first 15 songs I listened to on Spotify.
