One of the cool and interesting things about how Eddie got his sound was his ability to modify his rig the way a mechanic would a car. Nothing was stock.
Eddie assembled his main guitar, the black-and-white striped one used on their debut album by taking pieces from here and there.
He bought a 59 Fender Strat copy from Charvel for ~$50 and had them rout the body for just one pickup and one volume knob. For the pickup he added an old Gibson PAF, potted.
He also had Charvel make him a really wide neck that he paid $80 for, which he then added large Gibson frets to. The vibrato tailpiece came from a '58 Strat.
Eddie would pot his pickups by submerging the whole thing in paraffin wax to cut out the feedback. He'd then wrap them in Copper Tape.
His side piece amp is another Modded Marshall 1959 Super Lead Plexi. This one has a Golub SE Lead mod, adding an additional preamp tube for more gain.
He had a humble board that consisted of an MXR Phase 90 with the control set between 9 and 10 o'clock. He loved using this pedal on leads and solos to make it POP! He also used an Echoplex Tape Delay. Both would go straight into the amp's input instead of through the FX Loop.
Just like everything else, his amps were also modded. He used a modded Marshall 1959 Super LEad Plexi 100 Watt amp which was cranked to about 600 Watts due to the modifications he made. He'd crank all knobs to 10 with the exception of the reverb.
He modded the Marshall with a Variac to boost the volume and allow his pedals to work well within the signal chain. It would go from 0-160. In the studio he'd crank it to 140.
Eddie would use a Load Box after the Marshall head, essentially turning it into a preamp for the entire system. The output of the Load Box ran through his effects, then sent to the input of a power amp. The speaker output of his amp was set at 8 ohms and the Load Box resistance was set to 20 ohms so the amp wouldn't blow due to being cranked to full blast.
His Marshall Head went through a, you guessed it, a Marshall 4x12 Cab. One Cab was equipped with 25 Watt Greenback Celestion speakers, the other with JBL's.
